Love the Oceans
Empowering Communities and Preserving Our Seas
When we first encountered the work of Love The Oceans, we were blown away, not only by the fantastic work that they are doing in marine conservation and community development, but also by the incredible energy, drive and passion of founder Francesca Trottman.
Nestled along the stunning coast of Jangamo Bay in Mozambique, Love The Oceans is on a mission to protect our oceans, support local communities, and create a sustainable future. Through initiatives like establishing a Marine Protected Area, a community swim program, and the Ocean Conservation Champion program, Love The Oceans is creating a positive impact that will leave a lasting impact for the marine ecosystems.
Protecting Marine Ecosystems
Love The Oceans is seeking to help establish a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Jangamo Bay, Mozambique. By collaborating with local authorities and communities, they’re safeguarding fragile habitats and promoting sustainable fishing practices. This MPA will provide a sanctuary for marine life to thrive, including many species of sharks, rays and the famous humpback whales, and ensure a healthy and vibrant ocean for generations to come. The area has since been established as a Mission Blue Hope Spot in recognition of their work.
Community Support and Development
Love The Oceans believe that protecting our oceans starts with empowering local communities. They work hand-in-hand with the local people of Jangamo Bay, Mozambique, supporting education, training, and employment opportunities. By fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility, Love The Oceans is cultivating a community of passionate ocean advocates who actively participate in conservation efforts and ensure the well-being of their marine environment.
It places a strong emphasis on empowering women in the field of marine conservation. They actively support and encourage women to participate in their research programs, providing opportunities for training, leadership development, and career advancement. By promoting gender equality and inclusivity, Love The Oceans is breaking barriers and inspiring a new generation of female scientists and conservationists.
Imagine children, teenagers and adults all learning to swim while falling in love with the wonders of the ocean. The aim of the Love The Oceans swim program is to not only teach vital swimming skills but also foster a deep appreciation for the ocean. Through exciting activities and educational sessions, locals become ocean enthusiasts, understanding the importance of protecting marine life and preserving their beautiful coastal home.
Ocean Conservation Champion Program
Love The Oceans believes that every individual can be a champion for ocean conservation. That’s why they’ve launched their Ocean Conservation Champion program. They seek out passionate individuals within local communities and provide them with training and resources. These champions become ambassadors and divers, spreading awareness, implementing sustainable practices, and inspiring others to join the movement. Together, they create a powerful force for positive change.
“I applaud the Love the Oceans’ team and the entire community for doing what they can to push for a Marine Protected Area in the Jangamo Bay. With knowing comes caring, and the education they’re bringing to Jangamo Bay can empower young students to become ocean stewards and protect their blue backyard for generations to come.”
