Sixteen years ago, I went wreck diving in Narvik for the first time. I was there with friends, but we could only dive the wrecks up to 40 metres because most of us weren’t trained in Trimix. That’s when I first learned about the Grom at the museum in Narvik.
Three years later, at TekDive Belgium, a group of Polish technical divers gave a talk about their expedition to the Grom. I was fascinated by the wreck and started looking for a way to dive it myself. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone who was planning another expedition. Diving the Grom required a special permit, which was very difficult to obtain. So I had to put that dream on hold.
Vor 16 Jahren war ich zum ersten Mal zum Wracktauchen in Narvik. Damals war ich mit Freunden dort und wir konnten nur die Wracks bis 40 Meter tauchen weil die meisten keine Trimix Ausbildung hatten. Damals habe ich im Museum in Narvik zum ersten Mal etwas über die Grom erfahren.
Drei Jahre später, auf der Tekdive Belgien, hat dann eine Gruppe polnischer Tektaucher über ihre Expedition zur Grom berichtet. Ich war fasziniert von diesem Wrack und habe versucht eine Möglichkeit zu finden an dem Wrack zu tauchen. Leider habe ich niemanden gefunden der eine weitere Expedition geplant hat. An dem Wrack der Grom war das Tauchen nur mit spezieller Genehmigung erlaubt und die war schwer zu bekommen. Ich musste meinen Wunsch das Wrack zu betauchen erst einmal zurückstellen.
Last year, I was back in Narvik and tried again to find a way to dive the wreck. Nothing came of it at the time, but during that trip in 2024 I was able to connect with a great team: Uli Baumhör, Andrey Govorov, and Dominik Munich. Together, we were able to prepare and carry out a dive this year.
To make this dive happen, we had to transport all our equipment — including the boat and Bauer compressor — to Narvik. For me, that meant a 3,500 km drive from Zurich to Narvik. But what won’t you do for a special dive?Uli brought his boat, the Odin, from Germany to Norway. He handled the permit and — one of the most important parts — managed to confirm the exact position of the wreck. Everything was ready and perfectly prepared.
Letztes Jahr war ich erneut in Narvik und ich versuchte erneut eine Möglichkeit zu finden das Wrack zu betauchen. Leider wurde nichts daraus aber ich konnte während dieser Tour 2024 mit Uli Baumhör, Andrey Govorov und Dominik Munich ein kompetentes Team finden mit dem es möglich war einen Tauchgang für dieses Jahr vorzubereiten und zu realisieren. Für diesen Tauchgang haben wir unser gesamtes Equipment inklusive Boot und Bauerkompressor noch Narvik transportieren müssen. Für mich hiess das 3.500km mit dem Auto von Zürich bis nach Narvik. Was macht man nicht alles für einen besonderen Tauchgang.
Uli brachte sein Boot, die Odin, von Deutschland nach Norwegen. Er kümmerte sich um die Genehmigung und, mit das wichtigste, brachte die korrekte Position des Wracks in Erfahrung. Alles war bereit und perfekt vorbereitet.

Andrey and I dived the wreck of the Polish destroyer Grom on 6th July 2025. Our maximum depth was 104 metres. Visibility was over 20 metres. The wreck lies upside down but is in good condition, with many details still to be discovered.
The bottom line was a little distance from the wreck. Andrey secured the reel to the shot line and found the wreck within five minutes. When he pointed our large ERA Underwater light at the bow, I felt like I was at the Titanic — an absolute goosebumps moment.
The water temperature at 100 metres was +4°C, and it wasn’t much warmer during deco either. Only from 10 metres upward did it start to warm slightly, with a maximum of 9°C. Due to the temperatures, our maximum dive time was limited to 4 hours. Unfortunately, I only had 15 minutes to explore the wreck — but those 15 minutes will stay with me forever.
Andrey und ich tauchten das Wrack des polnischen Zerstörers Grom am 06.07.25. Unsere Maximaltiefe war 104 Meter. Die Sicht war 20+ Meter. Das Wrack liegt auf dem Kopf ist aber in einem guten Zustand und es gibt sehr viele Details zu entdecken. das Grundgewicht lag etwas entfernt vom Wrack. Andrey befestigte das Reel an der Schotleine und fand das Wrack innerhalb von 5 Minuten. Als er unsere grosse Lampe von ERA Underwater auf die Bugspitze des Wracks hielt fühlte ich mich fast wie an der Titanic, ein absoluter Gänsehautmoment.
Die Wassertemperatur auf 100 Meter Tiefe war +4°C und auch auf der Deko war es nicht viel wärmer. Erst ab 10 Meter wurde es etwas wärmer, max 9°C. Wegen der Temperaturen war unsere Maximaltauchzeit auf 4 Stunden begrenzt. Leider blieben mir für die Erkundung des Wracks nur 15 Minuten. Aber diese 15 Minuten werden unvergesslich bleiben.
One highlight of the wreck was the well-preserved torpedo tubes, slightly open next to the wreck, with torpedoes still visible inside. It was an incredible dive, and one I’d gladly repeat.
Ein Highligt am Wrack waren die gut erhaltenen Torpedorohre die leicht geöffnet neben dem Wrack liegen und in denen man noch die Torpedos sehen kann. Es war ein grossartiger Tauchgang den ich gerne wiederholen würde.
