The Making of Ellipse
Designed by fourth element and manufactured by Si-Tech, the Ellipse Dryglove System allows users to attach drygloves to their suit as well as replace damaged seals in the field. Born from a desire to create a dryglove system that was not only effective but easy to use with a sleek design, our Drysuit Sales and Service Manager Tony spent a year perfecting the Ellipse.
A diver for twenty-two years, the last twenty on a CCR, Tony understands the importance of keeping water out of places it shouldn’t be.
“Having tried several dryglove systems, some worked and some did not. I believe that a good dryglove should not only stay dry, but be easy to assemble and not bulky. I have trouble with skinny o-rings and fiddly clips, (the thought of calling a dive because a clip has been broken makes me shudder), and I don’t like massively oversized rings hanging from my wrists that make kitting up a struggle. I didn’t know exactly what was missing in the market, only that I hadn’t found a dryglove system I was completely happy with.”
With this in mind, the fourth element team started to piece together a system that would tackle each of the issues raised.
Push to fit was appealing because of its simplicity, to always have correct alignment would be even better. To tackle this a ‘keyed’ system was developed for the Ellipse, a system that made aligning the glove to the suit as easy to do by feel as it is by sight. Once the wrist ring is installed in the correct orientation, (tools are not needed to do this), the dry glove will be in a comfortable position every time.
The sealing o-ring is big enough to not slip out of place and get damaged, as well as being big enough to offer the diver a positive ‘click’ when pressing the glove ring into place.
Pre-production sets had been dived in-house and by fourth element test divers, initial reports were encouraging and told the team they were heading in the right direction. They began fine tuning the original design. Slim lining the plastics allowed larger hands to pass through and storage options and tools were sourced. The team then put many hours of diving and testing into the Ellipse system, developing and refining it further until they were confident it addressed all the problems that had previously been identified.
Essentially the Ellipse is a simple product. Its precision moulded plastic rings and o-rings offer you a reliable dryglove system with minimal parts and a reassuring, quality build. In use its low maintenance and the perfect addition to your Argonaut drysuit.
