Start as we mean to go on
We’re only three weeks in to the New Year and the Mission 2020 pledges are coming in thick and fast – but then, we can’t think of a better New Year’s resolution than eliminating single-use plastic and increasing efforts towards ocean conservation.
Mission 2020 was started by Fourth Element co-founders Jim Standing and Paul Strike. It aims to gather pledges from other members and dive industry stakeholders to make a fundamental change by World Oceans Day in 2020.
PADI are fully on board and released their Mission 2020 pledge last week.
“As PADI drives toward a fully integrated digital learning system, we lessen our dependency on packaging, thereby minimising the plastic footprint of hundreds of thousands of divers every year. We will further reduce plastic waste across our supply chain and rally our 6,600 dive centres and resorts to reduce single-use plastics.
Over 40 other dive centres and dive organisations have released Mission 2020 pledges since the start of this year alone – that’s fantastic progress and brings us up to an inspirational 116 pledges in total so far!
“Our fleet vessels will be completely single-use plastic free by the end of 2019. Single-use plastic water bottles have already been removed from our Red Sea fleet. We pledge to minimise pollution on our boats and in our worldwide offices, achieving this whilst educating yet also respecting local communities.”

“The Paralenz pledge to the ocean, is to keep all Paralenz packaging as produced today with cardboard and sealed with paper tape only. Aside from this, we pledge to continue our affiliation program to encourage collaboration between dive centres and NGOs as well as channeling funds towards ocean conservation”
“We pledge to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible and encourage others to do the same. From eliminating single-use plastic and offering alternatives to reducing flights and product shipping.”
“We will organise and coordinate 500 individual clean-up dives on our local dive sites, removing plastic and other waste, by World Oceans Day 2020.”
“At Aqua Lung, we are continuing our commitment to eliminate single-use plastic packaging on all of our products worldwide, whenever and wherever possible, finding sustainable alternatives everywhere we can. We will continue to further our use and implementation of renewable energy sources at our facilities across the globe.”
