Experience a dive with conger eels.
Diving at Inish Barna at the mouth of Killary Fjord is an incredible experience and a chance to get up close to big marine wildlife in the shape of conger eels.
Long term residents of the dive site, these eels have become used to encountering divers and these normally timid, noctunrnally active eels are rather more active than you would expect. You can realistically hope to encounter one of these beautiful animals free swimming and coming up close. They are probably hoping that you will provide then with a quick meal, but it is not necessary to do so - they are likely just to investigate you in the hope that you may just proffer up an offering for fish.
Getting to the dive site is a very easy 5 - 10 minute trip from the dive centre itself along a beautiful coastline into the mouth of the fjord. All too soon, you are at the dive site. Once in however, the abundance of life is obvious - there's a huge diversity of invertebrates and several fish species. The main attraction can be experienced at almost any depth, but is most likely somewhere between 17 and 25 metres down a steeply shelving sea bed.
A torch is essential as visibility can be very variable - it is in the mouth of a Fjord after all, and currents can be strong as millions of litres of water flow in and out of the Fjord twice a day with the tides, but to see a free swimming eel up close and personal is a dive that you won't forget.
Scuba Dive West has both the Xerotherm thermal base-layer and the Arctic extreme performance undersuit available to test.
These will be issued with drysuits rentals and to students taking the PADI Drysuit Diver Course with us. These toasty warm thermals are also available on a ‘try before you buy’ basis. Hire a set of Xerotherm or Arctic thermals for just €10 and be amazed by their snug fit and thermal properties. We will give you back €10 when you buy your very own set.
