Our World Underwater Scholarship Society
Fourth Element is an equipment sponsor of the Rolex Scholars of the Our World Underwater Scholarship Society. Every year the society awards year-long scholarships designed to give young people the opportunity of a lifetime to experience diving and marine related careers with funding, equipment and logistical support.
The Rolex Corporation provides the financial support, and diving equipment is supplied by many manufacturers including fourth element. Jim Standing, fourth element’s Marketing Director is also the European Coordinator for the scholarship and one of the directors of the charity.
“It is fantastic to see the personal development of the scholars during the year, and fourth element is proud to be a sponsor.”
Three Rolex scholarships are offered every year: one in Australasia, one in North America, and one in Europe. Each Rolex Scholarship provides a hands-on introduction to underwater and other aquatic-related endeavours for a young person considering a career in an underwater-related discipline.
Previous European Scholars have gone on to work for the BBC Natural History Unit, PADI International, Pinewood Studios Underwater Stage and many other marine industry companies. One scholar is selected from each of the three regions and each scholar spends approximately one year working side by side with current leaders in underwater fields. Each scholar travels primarily within his or her region, but may have opportunities throughout the underwater world. The range of experiences may include active participation in field studies, underwater research, scientific expeditions, laboratory assignments, equipment testing and design, photographic instruction, and other specialised assignments.
Each scholar is required to keep a journal and to produce a film of their year, which they present at the Explorers Club in New York at the conclusion of the Scholarship. Fourth Element supplies all three scholars with the thermal protection they need for their scholarship year.
The 2009/10 Rolex Scholars are:
North America: Mfanwy Rowlands
Europe: Filip Wolski
Australasia: Matt Carter
Want to become a scholar?
If you are under 26 and have a university degree or equivalent, but have not yet got a masters degree, then you are eligible to apply for the scholarship. You will need to demonstrate your passion for the underwater world and scuba diving. There really is no catch - it is the opportunity of a lifetime.
Too old to apply – we know how you feel. If you know a young person who might benefit – please point them in this direction.
